Alpine Plants for Rockeries, Pots & Borders
Alpine plants are a great way to add colour to sunny areas of the garden, especially from early spring onwards. They are ideal for rockeries, pots, troughs, gravel gardens and the front of borders, where lower-growing plants can soften edges and add seasonal interest.
At Old Oak Farm Nurseries, we stock a range of alpine plants including Aubretia, Saxifraga, Campanula, Arenaria, Arabis, Sedum, Phlox, Sempervivum and Armeria.
If you don’t have a rockery, alpines also work well in pots and shallow containers. Use free-draining compost and add horticultural grit to help improve drainage, especially for plants that dislike sitting wet for too long.
Alpine Troughs & Containers
Alpine troughs are a good low-maintenance option for patios, small gardens and sunny corners. They need very little space, and once established, many varieties can give colour and interest through spring and summer.
We have a selection of suitable pots, troughs and compost available, so you can choose the plants and the container together when you visit.
Where to Plant Alpines
Most alpines prefer a sunny position and free-draining soil. They are especially useful for rockeries, gravel areas, stone walls, pots, troughs and the front of borders. If your garden soil is heavy or wet, growing alpines in a container can often be the better option.
