Small Garden Trees, Acers & Fruit Trees

Trees can bring structure, height, blossom, fruit, berries, autumn colour and wildlife interest to a garden. You don’t always need a large space either - the right small tree can work well in a modest garden, patio area or even a large container.

At Old Oak Farm Nurseries, we stock a good selection of small garden trees including Malus, also known as Crab Apple, Prunus, including Cherry Blossom, Sorbus, also known as Mountain Ash, Acer, also known as Japanese Maple, and a good selection of fruit trees.

Choosing the Right Tree for your Garden

The best tree depends on the space you have, how much sun the area gets, the soil, and what you want from the tree. Some trees are chosen for spring blossom, some for fruit, some for berries, and others for autumn leaf colour.

If you’re planting near a patio, path, boundary or smaller garden, it’s worth choosing carefully so the tree suits the space as it grows.

Trees for Small Gardens and Containers

Smaller garden trees and Acers can be a good option where space is limited. Acers are especially popular for patios, sheltered spots and containers, with many varieties offering strong autumn colour.

If you’re planting a tree in a pot, choosing the right container and compost matters, as the tree will depend on that space for water, nutrients and root growth.

Trees for Blossom, Berries and Wildlife

Trees such as Crab Apple, Cherry Blossom and Mountain Ash can bring seasonal interest into the garden, from spring flowers to autumn berries and colour. They can also help support garden wildlife by providing food, shelter and habitat.
